Joya De Nicaragua Antaño 1970

My name is Agent 24. My mission was to review the Joya De Nicaragua Antaño 1970. As a new member of The Cigar Spy agency, I promise to respect the A.S.H.E.S. code of honor. This is my 1st cigar mission report.

Target Name:

Joya De Nicaragua Antaño 1970

Target Vitals:

Wrapper: Nicaragua Havana Criollo

Binder: Nicaragua Havana Criollo

Filler: Nicaragua Havana Criollo

Vitola: Belicoso

Year: 2008

Background Info:

Antano is Spanish for yesteryear and this cigar comes from the same factory that originally produced the Joya De Nicaragua line that was world famous in the 1970’s. Communist regimes and civil wars pretty much destroyed this area of Nicaragua and the line during the 1980’s. Since the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the Estelí region of Nicaragua has boomed back into prominence and JDN has come blazing back along with it. The JDN Antano 1970 is a tribute to those great cigars of the 70’s and the rebirth of the JDN lines!

Mission Notes:

The sun is starting to set, the crickets are starting to chirp and I have a full belly of pizza and beer. This is my favorite time of day to smoke. It’s primetime to unwind, enjoy an adult beverage and smoke a good cigar.

Appearance and first impressions:

The wrapper has a dark, oily appearance and feels strong in construction. There are a couple of veins in the leaf, but overall it has a solid look and feel. First whiffs of the foot and wrapper gives off a slight woodsy smell mixed with a hint of espresso and leather. I am really looking forward to this smoke.

Today’s pairing:

Pairing today’s Joya De Nicaragua Antano 1970 with a Tecate Cerveza.

From the first light through the first few puffs, I get a distinct peppery taste along with some nutty and woodsy nuances. It is full bodied from the start, but not overpowering. I have a good feeling that I am going to like this cigar.

As I get through the 1st third of the JDN Antano 1970, the taste is still consistent with pepper, nuts and woods. I really like the smoke that wafts off this cigar; it is a creamy color and drifts nicely. I am really feeling this cigar in my belly. It is a full feeling, once again not overpowering, but I imagine with an empty stomach, it would have quite the kick.

Now we are over halfway through the JDN and the taste is still consistent with the start. I still have that full feeling in my gut and am starting to get that nice even nicotine buzz. I am still not feeling overpowered though. This is a full-bodied cigar that has delivered quite nicely to this point without kicking my ass!

As I approach the last third, the peppery taste is most prevalent. I detect a hint of espresso teasing the taste buds and the full belly and nicotine buzz are kicked in full blast. It’s giving me that nice mellow that I enjoy. I am not big on nubbing cigars, but this one will get nubbed and nubbed hardcore!

Final Statement:

The Joya De Nicaragua Antano 1970 lives up to the hype. In my past experience, the full-bodied cigars I have smoked have always had a point where they overpowered you for a bit. The JDN was consistent all the way through and made for a thoroughly enjoyable smoke. This full-bodied cigar may not be for everyone, but if you like them full and consistent, that leave you feeling mellow, then run out and get yourself a couple of these bad boys! I certainly will add it to my rotation.

Nice review – sounds WAY too powerful for me, but for full bodied people it should hit the spot!

    Your hand looks funny.

Cigar is tilted to the right a little.

    Glare on Band.

Use different lens so background is in focus as well. I’d like to see the stain on your fence. If any.

Oh. Good job on the review. ;)
